Meet the Team: Eduardo Robert

What’s your role on the Third Pie Studios team? What does this entail?

Hey, I’m Eduardo! I’m the 3D Environmental Artist on the TPS team. Always spending my weeks transforming our fantastic 2D concept art into 3D game assets. How do I go about it? Well, I use a variety of programs to get the job done. Mainly I use 3ds Max, Zbrush, and Substance Painter to bring the model to life in a 3D environment. Using 3ds Max, I create the initial low-poly version of the model. Then with Zbrush, I put together a detailed high poly version. With both versions, we can begin texturing the model in Substance Painter. After this, as long as no issues pop up, we can put the model into the game!

There is always a lot to think about throughout the whole process. When it comes to technical stuff, I have to keep in mind the polygon count, how many materials are needed, what needs to be animated, just to name a few things. On the more artistic side, we must keep in mind to make sure the model captures the likeness of the concept. It can be a lot to manage, but I always find it rewarding and can feel myself learning with each new asset I make.

What interested you in game development?

One of the first things that grabbed my attention about game development was the opportunity to help create the worlds that I love to explore. Games like Skyrim, with a ton of lore to learn about and many locations to explore, really inspire me. As an environmental artist, I get the fantastic opportunity to create worlds that people can get immersed in, just like I did when playing games. Another positive aspect of game development is the team environment. I always enjoy working with a talented group of individuals to create elaborate environments. Being in a room with like-minded people, striving to make a fun and beautiful game is a great feeling that pushes me to improve my skills consistently. While game development can be stressful, the journey with your team and the final result will make it all worth it.

What are your favorite video games, and why?

When it comes to my favorite video games, it is hard to choose from the long list that I have played. When playing alone, I usually enjoy getting into RPGs. I have played Skyrim and several games from the Fallout series. A little more recently, I have played and loved Hollow Knight. I enjoy games that reward you for exploring. Finding little areas with little bits of lore is always a nice treat and adds to the mystery.

First-person shooters will always have a place in my heart. It wouldn’t be uncommon to find me playing a round of Overwatch or Rainbow Six Siege with some friends. I love playing shooters with friends because it is always a blast trying to work together to win the game.

What about the Ages of Cataria are you most excited about?

I am excited about the world presented in Cataria. Players will have the opportunity to explore this new world. While also spending time building their own unique colony. The players will watch their villagers grow up and go through several events that affect the whole village. I cannot wait to see how players will react to the multiple different events presented to them. It will be exciting to see what players will discover as they delve into the mysterious land of Cataria.

Favorite non-gaming things to do?

I like to be social whenever I can. Getting together with some friends and exploring the world around us will always be something I enjoy. Whether we go to a new restaurant or go to some random store. Always looking to experience new and unique locations. If meeting in person is too challenging, discord is always available. I love to spend my free time chatting with friends online over whatever topics come to mind.

Beyond TPS, where can we find you?

You can find me at my website or on my Artstation. You’re more than welcome to check them out!
